Dana Point Harbor
Dana Arts Plaza
Laguna Beach
San Clemente
Mission San Juan Capistrano

The first historical record of the Headlands dates back to the 1830s, when Richard Henry Dana in his book Two Years Before the Mast, called the Headlands and the surrounding Capistrano Bay the “only romantic spot in California.” Both the City of Dana Point and its geographical landform take their name from the author.

Throughout the nineteenth century, the Headlands served as a primary navigational landmark, and as a major trading destination where sailing ships exchanged manufactured goods and supplies to the San Juan Capistrano Mission for rawhides and meat that were flung down from the steep bluffs.

Today Dana Point Harbor provides slips and mooring for over 2,500 boats along with over 50 specialty shops and restaurants. The Harbor attracts thousands of visitors annually for shopping, sport fishing, walking, bicycling, kayaking and a host of recreational activities. There is also a direct ferry service from Dana Point Harbor to Catalina Island.

Nearby Salt Creek Beach is known as one of the preeminent performance surf spots in the world, while Doheny State Park to the south is home to local surf schools and is one of the best beginner waves in California.   The State Park has picnic areas with firepits and a beachfront promenade perfect for bicycling and rollerblading.
